Metabolic Core Unit (MCU)

The Metabolic Core Unit (MCU) of the CBBM, as part of the human/sleep laboratories, is available to all working groups in the CBBM for research studies. State-of-the art measurements on body composition and energy consumption of test persons can be performed.

The following examinations can be carried out:

  • Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry

DEXA measurements are the gold standard to determine to measure total body composition.

  • Air Displacement Plethysmography (BOD POD)

Using air displacement plethysmograph the body composition (fat and fat-free mass) can be determined.

  • Indirect Calorimetry

By measuring oxygen uptake (O2) and carbon dioxide production (CO2) energy expenditure can be analyzed.
